Return of the Gayelle stick fighting competition
Stick fighting in Trinidad is a traditional martial art that involves the use of wooden sticks as weapons. The art, which is also known as Kalinda or Kalenda, has its roots in the island’s African heritage and was practiced by enslaved Africans who used sticks as weapons to defend themselves. The art was passed down through generations and is still practiced today, often as a form of dance or performance. Stick fighting in Trinidad also includes elements of music, as the fighters often perform to the beat of drums.Â
